UNITED NATIONS POPULATION FUND: A PIECE OF ME

A Piece of Me exhibition was an immersive experience to elevate a short documentary series by international filmmaker Sara Elgamal as commissioned by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). After debuting in Toronto, the film and exhibit experience traveled to London, and New York and served as a key piece of their global campaign to raise awareness and end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) and took home a Shorty Award in 2020 for Best Global Campaign.

A Piece of Me is a stunning short documentary series directed by Sara Elgamel and produced by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), profiling the strength and resilience of survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Afar, Ethiopia. Somewherelse conceptualized, designed, and executed an immersive screening experience to allow guests to experience the film and learn about FGM in an multi-sensorial way.

Originally launched in Toronto, the immersive screenings took place in London, UK, and then the United Nations Headquarters in NYC.

The experience featured a multi-surface viewing room, floating displays of the wardrobe from the film, a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, and other exploratory elements, installation art. and photo opportunities. The A Piece of Me film + exhibit won a 2020 Shorty Award for Best Global Campaign, and gained significant media attention in the US, Canada, and the UK with features in NOWNESS, THE FADER (US), ELLE, GLOBAL CITIZEN, FLARE and TMRW MAGAZINE (UK).
